Heavy explosions reported in Erbil in northern Iraq near airport amid regional tensions

Blasts also heard earlier in Baghdad as air defenses reportedly activated

ISTANBUL

Heavy explosions were heard Saturday in Erbil in northern Iraq amid escalating regional tensions, according to an Anadolu correspondent.

Media reports said at least three explosions were heard near the Erbil International Airport, though no further details were immediately available.

New shelling were heard in the vicinity of the airport for the second time in hours, and air defenses intercepted the attack, according to local reports.

Earlier, explosions were also heard in Baghdad, the Anadolu correspondent reported.

Local media said the blasts coincided with sirens sounding inside the compound housing the US Embassy, with air defense systems reportedly activated.

The developments came despite Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian saying Saturday that Iran would refrain from attacking neighboring states unless attacks were launched against the country from their territories.

Iran began launching missiles and drones on Feb. 28 toward Israel and Gulf countries that host US military assets. Some of the strikes have caused casualties and damage to civilian sites, including ports and residential buildings.

Tehran said the attacks are in response to a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that has killed hundreds, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military officials.
