MOSCOW
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on Tuesday undermining the independence of Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).
The document was published on the website of Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.
The parliament approved the bill earlier in the day, effectively stripping both agencies of their autonomy.
The new law brings the independent NABU and SAPO under the oversight of the prosecutor general, who is appointed by the president.
NABU Director Semen Kryvonos had urged Zelenskyy to veto the legislation, warning it would "destroy Ukraine’s anti-corruption infrastructure."
