A rocket struck a UN peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon on Thursday, causing minor material damage but no casualties among Italian troops, Italy’s Defense Ministry said.
The projectile hit the Shama base, which serves as the headquarters of the Italian contingent and the western sector of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), according to the statement.
"The origin of which is still being ascertained," the ministry said, adding that no injuries were reported among Italian soldiers and only limited infrastructure damage occurred.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto is in contact with senior military officials, including the chief of defense staff, the commander of the Joint Operations Command (COVI), and the commander of the Italian contingent in Lebanon, to monitor developments and ensure personnel safety.
UNIFIL has operated in southern Lebanon since 1978 and was expanded under Security Council Resolution 1701 following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israel has carried out airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon since a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, despite a ceasefire that took effect in November 2024.
Lebanese authorities say at least 1,247 people have been killed and 3,690 injured in Israeli attacks since then.
