BRUSSELS
The leader of Italy's opposition Five Star Movement (M5S), Giuseppe Conte, accused the Italian government of violating international law by maintaining military ties with Israel, Italian news agency ANSA reported on Thursday.
The Chamber of Deputies rejected a motion by the Democratic Party (PD), Italian Socialist Party, and M5S to suspend the memorandum by 142 votes to 102.
Conte condemned the Italian government for continuing arms imports from Israel despite the ongoing conflict in Gaza, saying this "makes you complicit in the violation of international law."
He denounced Israel's recent actions as "genocide," adding: "Humanity was destroyed in Gaza. For months we've been asking (Georgia) Meloni, (Matteo) Salvini, and (Antonio) Tajani: how can you remain so indifferent? Your children and your consciences will ask you."
"The government has made a mockery of the country, no sanctions against the criminal government of Israel. We expected you to at least tear up this memorandum," Conte added.
He called for the immediate denunciation of the memorandum, warning that Italy's military ties effectively support violations of human rights and international norms.
"How do you intend to continue importing weapons from Israel? This is an act that makes you complicit in the violation of international law," he said.
