The Paris Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday that it has launched a preliminary investigation into TikTok’s algorithm and its impact on minors, particularly regarding suicide risks.
The investigation was initiated after Socialist lawmaker Arthur Delaporte raised concerns over the easy access minors have to TikTok’s algorithm, which he said is “likely to push the most vulnerable toward suicide," according to broadcaster BFMTV.
In September, the parliamentary inquiry committee on TikTok chaired by Delaporte recommended banning social media use for children aged under 15 and introducing a “digital curfew” for those aged 15-18.
The investigation has been entrusted to BL2C, the cybercrime unit of the Paris police headquarters, according to public prosecutor Laure Beccuau.
The investigation focuses particularly on "a platform's compliance with the obligation to notify suspected offenses committed through its services," and on "the publication of content promoting suicide."
