Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Security Council deputy chairman, said on Wednesday that the US President Donald Trump wants to “remain in history forever” by acquiring Greenland.
In a statement on Telegram, Medvedev argued that European countries would try to persuade Trump to “accept full guardianship” of Greenland while formally maintaining the island as a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
The former Russian president argued that this is not what Trump wants, adding that the US president instead seeks to “paint the island on world maps in the stars and stripes and stand alongside the founding fathers.”
He also said that US control over Greenland could lead to the collapse of NATO.
Greenland, a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted Trump’s interest due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources, as well as concerns about alleged Russian and Chinese activity.
Trump has refused to rule out using force to take the island and has posted meme-like images in support of his claims. Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposal to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
