China on Wednesday said that it will impose additional tariffs of 55% on imported beef from some countries, including Brazil and the US, if import amounts exceed certain quotas.
The Commerce Ministry said that an investigation has been launched to determine whether the import volume of the beef products increased, whether it caused damage to domestic industries and the extent of the damage, as well as the causal relationship between the increase in import volume and the damage.
"The investigating authorities determined that the increase in imported beef had seriously damaged China's domestic industry, and that there was a causal relationship between the increase in the quantity of imported products and the serious damage," it said.
The ministry said the 55% additional tariffs on beef imports will begin on Jan. 1, 2026, for three years.
