4.4 magnitude earthquake hits Russia's resort city of Sochi

Russian, European monitoring centers register tremors in the Black Sea; no casualties or destruction reported

MOSCOW

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit the Russian resort city of Sochi on Tuesday, according to the Russian Academy of Sciences Unified Geophysical Service.

A seismic event with a magnitude of 4.4 was registered in the Black Sea, 23 kilometers (14.3 miles) from Sochi, it said in a statement.

The city’s mayor, Andrey Proshunin, said there were no casualties or destruction.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre confirmed the Russian Unified Geophysical Service data, adding that a second quake with a magnitude of 4.5 was later registered near Sochi at a depth of 35 km (22 mi).

According to the center, the epicenter of the second temblor was 28 km (17.3 mi) from Sochi.
