5.7-magnitude earthquake kills 10 in Bangladesh

Over 350 injured, cracks emerge in dozens of buildings in and around capital Dhaka

DHAKA, Bangladesh

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Bangladesh on Friday, killing at least 10 people, including four in the capital Dhaka, and injuring over 350 people across the country, officials said.

Five people were killed in the central district of Narsingdi, the epicenter of the earthquake, the district magistrate and district deputy commissioner, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, told Anadolu, adding that over a hundred people were also injured.

A five-story building's railing collapsed in Dhaka's Bangshal neighborhood, killing three people, while another was killed as a building collapsed in the Mughdha neighborhood in Dhaka, according to a statement from the office of interim head Muhammad Yunus.

At least 14 buildings were affected by the tremor in Dhaka, and over 250 people were injured in a garment factory hub in central Gazipur district when factory workers panicked and rushed for safe refuge, it added.

A child was killed in central Narayanganj, and 24 others were injured, according to the statement.

The tremor, recorded at 10.38 am local time (0438GMT), struck with an epicenter in the Narsingdi district, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The quake lasted only a few seconds. Residents in Dhaka rushed out of buildings and homes as the ground shook, seeking safety in the streets.

The earthquake has caused casualties in various districts of the country, including house collapses and other accidents, it added.

Yunus expressed deep shock and sorrow at the losses.

He said that the government is closely monitoring the situation and initiatives have been taken to collect a full account of the damage.

The local fire department reported that seven buildings were damaged or affected by the quake in and around Dhaka, and at least one person was injured.

The earthquake was also felt in parts of neighboring India.
