WASHINGTON
The US Embassy in Doha issued a security advisory Wednesday for personnel and Americans in Qatar “to exercise increased caution and limit non-essential travel to Al Udeid Airbase.”
"We recommend U.S. citizens in Qatar do the same," it said in a security alert.
The US is pulling some personnel from Middle East bases, according to media reports, following a warning from a senior Iranian official that Tehran would target American installations if Washington carries out strikes against Iran
Qatar confirmed the departure of some personnel from the Al Udeid Air Base due to rising tensions.
The embassy said it is continuing to monitor the situation.
"At this time, U.S. Embassy staffing and operations are unchanged, and consular services continue as normal," it added.
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that killings in Iran are “stopping” and did not rule out US military action in response to the unrest.
“We have been informed by very important sources on the other side, and they said the killing has stopped and the executions won't take place,” he said. "We’ll watch and see what happens."
Trump has repeatedly vowed to back protesters in Iran, where a crackdown by authorities is said to have resulted in thousands of casualties.
Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of backing “riots” and “terrorism” in the protests.
Authorities have not released official figures on casualties or detainees. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a US-based group, estimates that at least 2,500 people have been killed, including protesters and security personnel, with more than 1,100 injured.
