WASHINGTON
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he had a “very good” phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, focusing mainly on the economy and trade between the two countries.
“This morning, I had a very good telephone call with President Lula of Brazil. We discussed many things, but it was mostly focused on the Economy, and Trade, between our two Countries,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We will be having further discussions, and will get together in the not too distant future, both in Brazil and the United States.”
Trump expressed optimism that the two nations “will do very well together.”
Trump previously imposed steep tariffs on Brazilian goods, with rates reaching as high as 50% on many imports. The US has also sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court justices over concerns regarding the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro and alleged curbs on freedom of expression.
