Peru interim government to declare state of emergency in capital after deadly protests

One killed, over 100 injured as youth-led protests rock Lima

ISTANBUL

Peru’s interim government announced Thursday it will declare a state of emergency in the capital Lima after violent youth-led protests left one person dead and more than 100 injured.

The unrest erupted after lawmakers impeached former President Dina Boluarte last week amid widespread anger over corruption and rising crime.

New Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez said the measure would cover Metropolitan Lima to restore order after protests near Congress turned deadly.

Police confirmed that 32-year-old rapper Eduardo Ruiz was fatally shot by an officer during Wednesday’s clashes. The officer has been detained and will be dismissed, according to the national police chief.

At least 113 people, including 84 police officers, were injured as demonstrators attempted to breach security barriers.

Thousands of young protesters – organized under the Generation Z movement – have taken to the streets demanding action against corruption, extortion and gang-related violence.

Social and political discontent continues to escalate in Peru. Neither Boluarte’s removal from power nor the subsequent election of interim President Jose Jeri has calmed the country.

Adding to tensions is the appointment of the new Cabinet led by Alvarez, who previously sparked controversy for likening the Generation Z protesters to terrorists on social media.
