Fighter jets escort two flights to Montreal after security alert

Two men arrested after planes land safely; incident caused temporary runway shutdown and delays

TRENTON, Canada

Fighter jets from Canada and the United States escorted two international flights bound for Montreal on Wednesday following a reported security situation.

The planes landed safely at Trudeau International Airport, where police arrested two male passengers in their 20s and 30s.

Authorities said they could face fraud-related charges.

A suspicious suitcase on one flight prompted the shutdown of one runway and caused temporary disruptions, according to officials. The airport later said the item did not pose a threat.

Air traffic returned to normal after delays, with NAV CANADA citing a possible security concern.

The fighter jets were deployed by NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command which oversees air defense for both countries.
