KHARTOUM / ISTANBUL
At least 21 Sudanese people have died of cholera in Sudan, with 2,345 new infections reported in the past week, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
The latest fatalities brought the overall death toll from the cholera to 2,408 among 96,681 infected people since August 2024, the ministry said in a statement.
Most of the cases were reported in the Tawila region of the North Darfur State in western Sudan, the ministry said.
On Sunday, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that over 640,000 children under the age of five are at high risk of violence, hunger, and cholera across North Darfur.
The health crisis comes as Sudan has been ravaged by fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, killing thousands and displacing millions, according to the UN and local authorities. Research from US universities estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
