LAGOS, Nigeria
The Nigerian Air Force on Monday said it launched Operation Fasan Yamma, killing over 400 terrorists in the Zamfara state during a coordinated air and ground assault on Makakkari Forest.
Ehimen Ejodame, a spokesperson for the air force, said in a statement that the operation was carried out on Sunday after credible intelligence.
“The operation involved precision airstrikes and ground assaults, resulting in the deaths of notorious kingpins and scores of their foot soldiers,” the statement added.
Banditry in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest and north-central regions, has been a significant security challenge for the country. These groups are notorious for their brutality, frequently attacking villages, kidnapping residents for ransom, and looting property.
President Bola Tinubu has taken a firm stance against bandits and terrorists in Nigeria, urging them to surrender or face decisive action from the government.
