A Turkish medical NGO will carry out a number of surgeries in the Gaza Strip with the aim of helping Palestinians injured in a recent deadly Israeli offensive in the seaside strip.
Dr Hava Sula, a board member of the Earth Doctors NGO, said a five-member medical team from the Turkish charity arrived in Gaza on Sunday to conduct a number of surgeries.
“The medical team will carry out 20 surgeries in Gaza,” Sula told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.
She said the Turkish NGO had sought permission from Israeli authorities to carry out surgeries in Gaza one year ago.
“Today, we are in Gaza to heal the wounds of our people here,” she said.
The Turkish doctor said the blockaded Gaza Strip suffers from a shortage of medical equipment.
“Many of those injured in the Israeli war were unable to travel abroad due to the closure of Gaza’s crossings,” she said.
In late 2014, Israel launched a 51-day onslaught on the Gaza Strip on claims of undermining the capability of Palestinian factions to fire rockets into Israel.
At least 2,322 Palestinians were killed and around 11,000 injured in the Israeli onslaught, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
