Jordanian King Abdullah II on Monday met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York to discuss developments pertaining to Palestine and Syria, according to the Jordanian Royal Court.

The meeting, which also reportedly tackled certain aspects of the U.S.-Jordanian “strategic partnership”, was held on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

According to a Royal Court statement, King Abdullah during the conversation stressed the need to resume Israel-Palestine peace talks “based on the notion of a two-state solution and with a view to ensuring the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital”.

Both men also reportedly stressed the need to find a political solution in Syria “in a manner that preserves the unity of Syria and the cohesion of the Syrian people”.

King Abdullah arrived in the U.S. last week to participate in the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, a nine-day event slated to wrap up on Oct. 5.
