Israel on Friday placed Fida Akhlil, a 23-year-old Palestinian woman, in administrative detention for six months just after she completed a 95-day jail term for “incitement”, according to a Palestinian NGO.

The move was announced on the same day that Akhlil, who hails from the West Bank city of Hebron (Al-Khalil), was expected to be released, the Palestinian Society Prisoners Society said in a statement.

Akhlil, who has remained in Israeli custody since May 29 for alleged “incitement”, has already spent 95 days behind bars.

According to Palestinian figures, some 6,500 Palestinians are currently languishing in Israeli jails, including dozens of women, scores of minors, and at least six Palestinian lawmakers.
