JERUSALEM
The Israeli army said on Friday that a late Thursday alert against the background of infiltration into the southern Israeli city of Eilat was based on a fake warning.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted the army as saying that an alert announced in Eilat earlier was based on a fake warning and that life returned in the coastal city to normal.
Israeli sources said late on Thursday that Israeli security forces had started searching for four people believed to have managed to infiltrate into Eilat from the sea.
The website of the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that Israeli security forces hurried to the coast of Eilat and closed down a road leading to the Taba crossing on the border between Egypt and Israel.
Security forces are searching for four suspects, the website of the newspaper reported.
The website did not, however, refer to the nationality of the suspected infiltrators. The Israeli army did not issue a statement about the reported infiltration either.
Israeli police, meanwhile, said on its website that some terrorists might have managed to infiltrate from the sea.
It said policemen had searched the area and closed down the road leading to the Taba crossing.
