WASHINGTON
Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged the 91st anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic on Tuesday.
"The partnership between our two governments is vital to the security and prosperity of all our citizens," Kerry said in a statement. "As close NATO allies for more than 60 years, we continue to work side-by-side in addressing the serious challenges confronting us in the region and around the globe."
The Republic of Turkey was founded Oct. 29, 1923, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I.
Kerry recalled his recent visit to Turkey and said that the U.S. has always been in close contact with Turkish officials with respect to global and regional issues as two close partners.
"We talk often, and we are always candid and respectful both about our agreements and the areas where we see things differently," he added.
He also noted that the U.S. is home to a vibrant Turkish-American community.
