ANKARA
Italian cyclist Sacha Modolo has won the fifth stage of the 51st Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey.
Modolo, who races for the Lampre-Merida team, won the 160 kilometer-long race from Mugla to Pamukkale in Denizli Province in four hours, six minutes and 19 seconds on Thursday.
Spaniard Carlos Barbero Cuesta, racing for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, came second and the Australian Jay McCarthy, racing for Tinkoff-Saxo, came in third.
The overall provisional classification after five stages is headed by Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin, racing for CCC Sprandi Polkowice, with 19 hours, 42 minutes and 8 seconds.
Croatian cyclist Kristijan Durasek, racing for Lampre-Merida, came second running 22 seconds behind, and Argentinian Eduardo Sepulveda, racing for Bretagne-Seche Environnement, came third at 54 seconds behind.
Modolo said he had won after a “long break”, given his last stage win was in Argentina in January.
He said that the Italia and Swiss Tours were also on his program, and that France may also be added to them, but he went on “... after the Tour of Turkey, I plan to take a little rest”.
The sixth stage of the 51st Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey will take place on Friday.
The 184-kilometer race begins in Denizli and ends in Selcuk in Turkey’s western province of Izmir.
Twenty-one teams and 168 cyclists currently compete in eight stages of the 51st Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey, which began last Sunday in Turkey's Mediterranean resort town of Alanya and will last until May 3.
