Fenerbahce snatched a narrow victory from Mersin Idmanyurdu, 1-0, in the Spor Toto Super League match at Mersin Arena Sunday.
In the 50th minute, Mersin Idmanyurdu goalkeeper Muammer Yildirim was sent off when he penalized Fenerbahce forward Moussa Sow, who was the last man.
After the red card, Mersin Idmanyurdu closed in and looked for chances on counter attacks.
Near the end of the game, Fenerbahce captain Emre Belozoglu scored a vital goal for his team. Turkish midfielder smashed from outside the penalty area. The late winner made Fenerbahce hold onto the title race.
Being on the second spot, Fenerbahce raised their points to 70 in the league, which is led by Galatasaray with 73 points and two games to spare.
Fenerbahce right-back Gokhan Gonul will miss the upcoming match against Istanbul Basaksehir.
Meanwhile, SAI Kayseri Erciyesspor has been relegated to the PTT First League by losing against Istanbul Basaksehir, 1-0. Moreover, Osmanlispor has been promoted to Spor Toto Super League with a match to spare.
Besiktas will host Torku Konyaspor at Osmanli Stadium in Ankara Monday. The game will start at 8 p.m., local time (1700 GMT).
Besiktas may lack regulars such as midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup and center-back Ersan Gulum because of injury problems; winger Gokhan Tore has also been sidelined because of flu.
Black Eagles are in third place with 66 points.
