Nainawa power plant of 750 megawatt (MW) in Iraq's Mosul city, built by Turkish company Calik Energy, is planned to be completed and opened until September, 2013.
Nainawa will be the fourth biggest power plant of Iraq and the biggest one in Karbala, head of the project Abdullah Bas told AA in an exclusive interview and added Karbala al-Khairat power plant was generating 1000 MW electricity with eight turbines.
"We'll activate two more turbines after the Ramadan holiday (Eid al-Fitr) and increase the amount to 1,250 MW, generating 2 thousand MW electricity in total from both power plants. We'll supply 1/8 of Iraq's electricity demand," Bas said. "We already ignited two of six turbines in Nainawa and will ignite the rest after Eid al-Fitr. For turbines' activation, gas, LDO and crude oil are used."
He added the project costs $388.5 million, where 110 engineers and 1000 employees are employed.
The foundation of the power plant was laid on May 24, 2011 with the attendance of Calik Holding's Board Chairman Ahmet Calik, Calik Energy's general director Osman Saim Dinc, Governor of Mosul Asil Najafi and Iraq's Electricity Deputy Minister Saad Abraham Hammudi.
