Strait of Hormuz should not be used as political, economic pressure tool: Gulf Cooperation Council chief

The Strait of Hormuz should not be used as a political or economic pressure tool, Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said Wednesday.

Speaking during an exchange of views with the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, Albudaiwi stressed that any attempt to impose a new reality by force in the vital maritime corridor is unacceptable.

"The Strait of Hormuz must remain an open and secure international waterway free from threats or restrictions. Any attempt to impose a new reality by force or to use it as a political and economical pressure tool is unacceptable and has been condemned at both regional and international levels," he said.

He highlighted that the Strait of Hormuz is a key artery for global energy supplies and international trade, warning that disruptions could have serious consequences for markets, supply chains, and economic stability.

Albudaiwi said the Gulf region is going through a "critical phase," warning that what he described as ongoing Iranian escalation poses a direct threat to regional and international stability, as well as to international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

"The international community must take a stronger and more effective role in supporting stability and reducing escalation," he said.

Turning to EU-GCC cooperation, Albudaiwi outlined priority areas including energy exports through electricity interconnection, clean hydrogen exports via pipelines or carriers, enhanced logistical connectivity through railways and airports, and improved data connectivity.

He added that the EU has the capacity to play a significant role in conflict resolution, given its global influence and available tools.
