US stocks close with gains

ANKARA

Major indices in the US closed with gains Tuesday, recovering partially from last week's losses.

The Dow Jones was up 54 points, or 0.15%, to 36,142. The S&P 500 rose 18 points, or 0.39%, to 4,700.

The Nasdaq increased 120, or 0.76%, to 15,973.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, reversed course and declined 0.3% to 16.44.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes rose 0.77% to 1.633%, while the dollar index was up 0.54% to 95.92.

Oil prices were up with international benchmark Brent crude adding 0.55% to $82.50 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate rose 0.1% to $79.83.

Precious metals were down with gold losing 0.66% $1,850 per ounce and silver shedding 1% to $24.82.

After plummeting to as low as $58,574 at 5 a.m. EDT and losing 7.8% of its value, Bitcoin failed to recover as the world's largest cryptocurrency was trading around $60,450 with a 5.2% loss.
