Turkey on Thursday condemned a deadly terror attack in the northern part of Ivory Coast.

"We are saddened to receive the news that many soldiers lost their lives and were wounded in a terrorist attack targeted a checkpoint today in the town of Kafolo, near the border of Burkina Faso, in the northern region of Cote d’Ivoire," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We condemn this heinous terrorist attack. We wish Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives, speedy recovery to the wounded, and offer our sincere condolences to the brotherly people and Government of Cote d’Ivoire," it added.

Like other countries in West Africa plagued by terrorism, Ivory Coast has suffered from terrorist attacks, such as one in March 2016 in the seaside resort of Grand Bassam that killed at least 19 people.

According to UN figures, more than 850 people have been killed and 840,000 have been displaced since 2015 in terrorist attacks in Burkino Faso.
