The 2020 men’s football season in South Korea will kick off on May 8 after a delay due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"In accordance with the government's “social distance” policy, all games will be held unattended for the time being after the opening," the South Korean league said on its website.

In the opener of K League 1, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will host Suwon Samsung Bluewings at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Also, the second-tier season will be held on May 8.

According to Johns Hopkins University, South Korea has recorded 10,708 cases so far, with 240 deaths.

After originating in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 185 countries and regions, with Europe and the US currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed nearly 192,000 people, with total infections exceeding 2.73 million, while nearly 751,000 have recovered.
