Mexico confirms 2 coronavirus cases

MICHOACAN, Mexico

The Mexican government confirmed on Friday morning two cases of coronavirus in the country.

One person is in a hospital in Mexico City, and the other is in the northern state of Sinaloa. Both people are in isolation.

“Let’s be calm. We have the capacity to face this situation,” Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.

The Mexican president emphasized that there was no need for panic and that the government would update citizens daily.

One of the patients reportedly had contact with someone who recently traveled to Italy, where there is a coronavirus outbreak.

The patient in Sinaloa is still waiting for one more test to fully confirm the coronavirus, but the government said it’s currently considering them as two cases of imported coronavirus.

The assistant heath secretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell said the government has quarantined five family members from one of the people with coronavirus.

“This is not a grave sickness. The majority of the cases, 90% of the cases, aren’t serious,” he said.

Late Thursday evening, the Mexican government released a website with comprehensive information about the virus, which detailed the country’s “Plan of Preparation and Response.”

The plan’s recommendations mostly consisted of basic information, such as “washing your hands” and avoiding travel to China.

First detected in China last December, the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 has now spread to more than 45 countries worldwide, including the U.S., U.K., Singapore, France, Russia, Spain and India.
