JAKARTA, Indonesia

Indonesia and Malaysia on Wednesday confirmed record daily coronavirus cases as both the neighboring countries continue to be in the grips of the Delta variant, a strain first detected in India.

Indonesia recorded 54,517 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall caseload to 2.67 million. As many as 991 more people died of the disease, pushing total to 69,210.

At least 443,473 patients are still receiving treatment in health facilities, or undergoing self-isolation.

Malaysia reported 11,618 new cases, raising the overall count to 867,567, including 6,503 related deaths. The state of Selangor recorded the most infections, followed by the capital Kuala Lumpur.

While Indonesia has administered 54.4 million doses of COVID vaccines, Malaysia has given 12.21 million.
