Hurricane Iota, labeled as Category 4 and "extremely dangerous" made landfall on Nicaragua’s coast on Monday night, the US' National Hurricane Center announced.
The center said the hurricane, with sustained winds of nearly 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour), will cause life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds, flash flooding, and landslides across some parts of Central America.
Hurricane Iota's landfall location is approximately 15 miles (25 kilometers) south of where Category 4 Hurricane Eta made landfall earlier this month on Nov. 3.
Eta was later downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved toward Guatemala where people died in mudslides and Honduras -- the worst affected in the hurricane's path.
The storm also claimed lives in Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Belize and Mexico.
