Greek Cypriots alarmed over increase in virus cases

LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Hospitals in the Greek Cypriot administration have been alarmed over the drastic increase of coronavirus cases.

Local Phileleftheros daily reported that the high number of COVID-19 cases in the Greek Cypriot administration has put pressure on the healthcare system and the bed occupancy rate in hospitals reached 50%.

In November, the daily noted, a total of 22 people lost their lives due to the coronavirus and 31 others, who had tested positive for the virus, died due to other health complications.

A total of 17 patients are currently being treated and 13 of them are in the intensive care unit, which has a total bed capacity of 28, the daily said.

On Thursday, the Health Ministry of Greek Cypriot administration announced that 12,099 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours and 220 new coronavirus cases were registered.

The death toll in Greek Cypriot administration stands at 48.​​​​​​​
