ISTANBUL

The Greek Embassy said Wednesday that Greece "fully" shares the sorrow of its Turkish neighbors after two strong earthquakes jolted southern Türkiye, killing over 9,000 people.

"We deeply feel for the innocent victims of this monstrous event and fully share the sorrow of our Turkish neighbors and friends," the Ankara-based embassy said on Twitter.

"Geçmiş olsun Komşu!" it added, meaning "Get well soon, neighbor!"

It also noted that a liaison team was dispatched Wednesday by the embassy to Hatay to reach the Greek rescue team in the field and to assist the second rescue team due to land at Incirlik Air Base.

At least 9,057 people were killed and 52,979 others injured when two powerful earthquakes shook Pazarcık and Elbistan districts Monday in Kahramanmaras province.

Nine other provinces have been affected by the deadly quakes including Malatya, Adiyaman, Hatay and Osmaniye.
