BERLIN

At least 20 people, including several children, were injured on Monday when a car rammed into a group of people during a carnival parade in the small town of Volkmarsen, western Germany.

Police spokesman Reiner Lingner told news channel Welt that the driver was taken into custody, adding that it was still not clear whether he deliberately drove the car into the crowd.

Public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) reported that the driver was a 29-year-old German citizen, and he was suspected of intentionally ramming the car into the carnival parade.

Volkmarsen is located around 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of Frankfurt.
