TRABZON, Turkey

The 2020 winners of the Turkish Cup football tournament, Trabzonspor, were eliminated Wednesday from the local contest in a shocking loss for the Black Sea club.

A lower division club, Adana Demirspor eliminated Trabzonspor in the Ziraat Turkish Cup's fifth round on penalties.

Adana Demirspor led the game twice but were unable to avoid Trabzonspor defender Vitor Hugo's two goals from the header.

In the injury time of the second half, Trabzonspor were awarded a penalty kick while the score was 2-2.

However, Trabzonspor midfielder Lewis Baker missed it. The visitors' goalkeeper Vedat Karakus parried the shot to the corner as the game went to extra time.

The regular and extra time ended 2-2 in Trabzonspor's home Medical Park. The winning team had to be decided via penalty shootout.

Adana Demirspor advanced to the last 16, winning 4-3 on penalties.

So, Trabzonspor have been knocked out of the 2020-21 Turkish Cup campaign.
