Football leagues in the Czech Republic, which were suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, are expected to restart the season on May 25.

The Committee of the Football League Association has approved the resumption of the top two divisions.

''The Committee of the Football League Association approved the restarting of the Fortuna league and Fortuna National league as soon as sports events are allowed, in accordance with the conditions met in the relevant epidemiological measures," it said in a statement on Monday.

"With regard to the currently valid plan for the unease of the measures, the resumption of the leagues is expected by May 25."

Countless sports events, including the 2020 Summers Olympics, have either been postponed or canceled due to the pandemic that has claimed more than 211,000 lives in 185 countries and regions.

The affected countries, however, are gradually returning to normal, with many governments having announced plans to lift the restrictions.

The Czech Republic, the landlocked country in Central Europe, has registered at least 7,449 COVID-19 cases, along with 223 deaths and 2,842 recoveries, according to Johns Hopkins University.
