EU passenger car market expands 11.5% in February

ANKARA

Passenger car market in the EU expanded 11.5% year-on-year in February, owing to the base of comparison as the chip shortage crisis hit the industry at the beginning of 2022.

Automobile registrations reached 802,763 units last month, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) data showed on Tuesday.

While the number of battery electric and hybrid cars posted increases in February, petrol remained the top choice for newly-registered cars in the EU, with a market share of 36.9%.

Battery electric and hybrid cars represented 12.1% and 25.5% of the market respectively.

In January-February, the EU market grew 11.4% from a year earlier with 1.6 million new cars registered.

In the EU's four largest markets, Spain saw the strongest hike (up 32.1%), followed by Italy (up 18.2%) and France (up 9.1%).

German car registrations was marginally up by 0.2% during this two-month period.
