At least 18 policemen have been charged in the Democratic Republic Congo in connection with the torching of a UN military base and the town hall in the country’s northeast.
According to Lt. Pius Mungere, a security officer in North Kivu, the incident took place on Nov. 25, 2019 in Beni city.
“The 18 policemen are being charged for complicity in the fire, abandonment of post, looting and inciting soldiers to commit acts contrary to military duty and discipline,” Mungere said.
He said the findings of the investigation were submitted to a military court on April 27.
The officer said that 16 civilians were also arrested and being prosecuted in a magistrate's court.
