Big spike in UK COVID-19 cases as gov’t muddles numbers

LONDON

Britain announced an additional 12,872 new cases of the coronavirus in the UK in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 480,017.

The huge rise is almost double Friday’s figure.

A “technical issue” caused a delay in the release of the numbers – an issue that has since been resolved. But it means extra cases in England from the previous period between Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 will be added to the coming days’ tallies.

It is unclear how many new cases are from Saturday and how many are from the previous period.

The figure would otherwise be the highest recorded, excluding the period at the beginning of the pandemic when testing was still being set up, and which almost certainly saw higher cases numbers than what was reported at the time.

The government also announced 49 people died from COVID-19, bringing that number to 42,317.
