DHAKA, Bangladesh 

Nearly 80% of people killed by coronavirus are men in Bangladesh, health authorities said on Wednesday.

A further 46 people died in the past 24 hours, and 38 of them were men while eight were women. And with the latest figure the deaths in COVID-19 rose to 2,197.

Meanwhile, 3,489 fresh cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the same period, taking the total infection count to 172,134.

The latest coronavirus figures were announced by Nasima Sultana, director-general at the Directorate General of Health Services operating under the Health Ministry, in a regular online news conference.

The death rate of men in Bangladesh is 79.24% and it is 20.76% for women, she mentioned.

As many as 2,736 people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 80,838 with a 46.96% recovery rate, the official added.

The South Asian nation of 165 million population tested 15,883 samples in the past 24 hours in 75 labs across the country. The current casualty rate stands at 1.28% and 22.26% of the single-day test results came positive.

Bangladesh has run test on a total of 889,152 samples as of Tuesday with an overall infection rate of 19.36%.

The COVID-19 infection was reported on March 8 in the country.
