ANKARA

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune arrived in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Monday for a two-day official visit.

Tebboune was welcomed by his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and senior Egyptian officials upon his arrival at Cairo International Airport, the state-run Algeria Press Service reported.

The Algerian leader will hold talks with Egyptian officials on ways of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, it said.

Tebboune's visit is the first by an Algerian president to Egypt in nearly 14 years, when former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika visited Cairo in 2008.
In June 2014, Sisi visited Algeria in what was his first foreign visit after his election as president.

Cairo is considered the third Arab destination for Tebboune since he was elected president in December 2019. He had visited Saudi Arabia in February 2020 and Tunisia last December.
