Three players of Brazilian football club Flamengo have tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Flamengo said 293 people associated with the club, including players, workers, and their family members, were tested between April 30 and May 3.

The club said a total of 38 people tested positive for COVID-19 and all of them were asymptomatic.

Apart from the three players, others who tested positive were 25 family members of players and associated employees, six members of the club’s support staff, and two workers of companies contracted by Flamengo.

The club did not disclose the identities of the infected people and said all of them will remain in quarantine until their tests are clear.

The current Brazilian and South American champions reaffirmed their commitment to work with authorities and follow government guidelines on the coronavirus pandemic.

The development comes days after 68-year-old Jorge Luiz Domingos, a masseur associated with Flamengo for four decades, died of COVID-19.

Professional football has been suspended since mid-March in Brazil, South America’s hardest-hit country in the pandemic.

As of Thursday, the country had close to 127,000 confirmed cases and almost 9,000 deaths, according to data compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
