2016 champion Kerber eliminated in 1st round of Australian Open

ANKARA

Angelique Kerber was eliminated on Tuesday by Kaia Kanepi in the women's first round of the 2022 Australian Open.

Estonia’s Kanepi won the game against the 2016 Australian Open champion with 6-4 and 6-3 sets.

Three-time grand slam winner Kerber had been eliminated in the first round of the 2021 tournament as well.

The German player previously won the 2016 Australian Open, 2016 US Open, and 2018 Wimbledon women's singles titles.

In another first-round match on Tuesday, Romanian Sorana Cirstea stunned Czech Petra Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon singles champion in 2011 and 2014, with 6-2 and 6-2 sets.

Kvitova, the 2019 Australian Open finalist, was also eliminated in the second round of the 2021 Australian Open.

Medvedev passes Laaksonen in Round 1

Daniil Medvedev passed Henri Laaksonen on Tuesday in the men's first round of the 2022 Australian Open.

The world no. 2 defeated his Swiss opponent with 6-1, 6-4, and 7-6 sets.

Medvedev won the 2021 US Open men's singles title and reached the finals in the 2021 Australian Open and 2019 US Open.
