The Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday claimed that its air force thwarted a massive missile attack by Ukrainian armed forces in Kherson, a southern Ukrainian city currently under Russia’s control.

"On April 27, at about 23 o'clock Moscow time, the Ukrainian armed forces launched a massive missile attack with Tochka-U ballistic missiles and high-power multiple launch rocket systems on residential blocks in the central part of the city of Kherson.

"The targets of the indiscriminate missile strike by the nationalists were residential areas in the area of Ushakov Avenue, where kindergartens, schools and many social institutions are also located," the ministry's spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at a press briefing in Moscow.

According to Konashenkov, the Russian air defense system thwarted the attack, intercepting 12 shells of a high-power multiple launch rocket system as well as two Ukrainian Tochka-U ballistic missiles in the city's airspace, with pieces of one of the missiles falling in a city park.

"The Kyiv nationalist regime's indiscriminate missile strikes on residential areas of Izyum and Kherson is a war crime and a gross violation of international humanitarian law," he said.

According to Konashenkov, "the target of the strike was the city hospital, where the Russian medical detachment is located, providing assistance to the population of the Kharkiv region."

Meanwhile, Russian aircraft targeted 67 Ukraine's military facilities, including six control points, two strong points, two large warehouses of rocket and artillery weapons, and 55 places of concentration of manpower and military equipment, Konashenkov claimed.

"As a result of the strikes, more than 300 nationalists and up to 40 armored vehicles and vehicles were eliminated," he said.

The Russian military also hit four Ukraine's military targets on Wednesday night, including concentrations of manpower and military equipment and warehouses of rocket and artillery ammunition.

Strategic Rocket Forces and artillery hit 18 control points and 383 areas of concentration of manpower and Ukrainian military equipment, while air defense systems shot down a Ukrainian Su-24 fighter jet, five unmanned aerial vehicles, and intercepted a Tochka-U ballistic missile strike on residential areas of Izyum city, Konashenkov said.

"In total, since the beginning of the special military operation, 142 aircraft, 111 helicopters, 614 unmanned aerial vehicles, 276 air defense systems, 2,623 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 299 multiple rocket launchers, 1,146 field artillery and mortars, as well as 2,431 units of special military vehicles have been destroyed," the spokesman said.

At least 2,787 civilians have been killed and 3,152 others injured in Ukraine since the war started on Feb. 24, according to UN estimates. The true toll is feared to be much higher.

So far, 7.7 million people in Ukraine have been internally displaced, with more than 5.3 million fleeing to other countries, according to the UN refugee agency.
