France opens new refugee center for migrants

Center to shelter 100 migrants living in streets of capital Paris, says governor of northern Ile-de-France region

PARIS

A new refugee shelter will be opened for irregular migrants living on the streets of Paris, said governor of northern Ile-de-France, the region which contains the capital.

The center will have a capacity of 100 people, Michel Cadot said in a statement on Wednesday.

However, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the measure would not be enough considering much higher number of irregular migrants living in the capital.

The authorities have carried out dozens of evacuation operations in Paris and placed migrants in temporary shelter centers.

Thousands of irregular migrants continue their lives in barracks and makeshift tents in Paris.
