European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib on Wednesday called for an immediate end to violence in Syria following Israeli airstrikes in the Suwayda region and Damascus.
“Israeli airstrikes targeting civilians in Syria’s Sweida (Suwayda) region and in Damascus must stop,” Lahbib wrote on X, adding that she was “deeply concerned by the outbreak of inter-community violence in the country.”
Lahbib stressed the need to protect civilians and restore calm amid the escalating tensions.
She underlined that the bloc demands "an immediate end to all violence, protection of civilians and full accountability."
Israel launched airstrikes Wednesday on Damascus, targeting Syria's Defense Ministry and areas near the presidential palace.
The strikes came as Israel resumed attacks in southern Syria's Suwayda province, warning it will continue unless Syrian forces withdraw.
The Syrian army had deployed troops to the area to restore order after clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups killed at least 30 people.
The Israeli army claims the operations are to protect the Druze minority.
