Turkey's total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by 4.4 percent to nearly 496.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2016 from 475.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2015, according to Turkish Statistical Institute's (Turkstat) data on Friday.
The energy sector accounted for the largest share of GHG emissions at 72.8 percent and industrial processes and product use followed with 12.6 percent, while agricultural activities accounted for 11.4 percent and waste represented a 3.3 percent share.
Total GHG emissions as CO2 equivalent increased by 135.4 percent in 2016 compared to the emissions in 1990. CO2 equivalent emissions per capita were 6.3 tonnes in 2016, up from 3.8 tonnes in 1990.
- Energy sector sees biggest share of total CO2 emissions
The biggest share with 86.1 percent of total CO2 emissions was down to the energy sector, out of which the energy sector's sub-category - electricity and heat production represented 33.5 percent.
The remaining 13.6 percent of these emissions originated from industrial processes and product use, out of which 0.3 percent came from agricultural activities and the waste sector.
- 55.5 percent of CH4 emissions originate from agricultural activities
The highest portion of CH4 emissions originated from agricultural activities at 55.5 percent while waste produced 25.8 percent, energy generated 18.6 percent and approx. 0.03 came from industrial processes and product use.
Agricultural activities generated 77.6 percent of N2O emissions while 12.1 percent, 6.5 percent and 3.8 percent of N2O emissions originated from energy, waste, and industrial processes and product use, respectively.
