-Brexit and Leaders’ Summit
The U.K.’s decision to exit the EU will be the main topic on Brussels’ agenda this week.
The European Council will discuss the outcome of the U.K. referendum. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Cameron will explain the situation in the U.K. after the vote, followed by a first exchange of views. On Wednesday, the 27 heads of state will meet informally to discuss the political and practical implications of the referendum results. They will also start a debate on the future of the European Union with 27 member states.
Leaders will address migration. In particular they will focus on the situation in the Central Mediterranean region and on cooperation with third countries of origin and transit. They will also take stock of the implementation of the EU-Turkey statement of March 18, 2016 and the closure of the Western Balkans route.
The European Council will discuss EU-NATO cooperation ahead of the NATO summit in Warsaw on July 8-9, 2016.
-European Parliament
MEPs will meet in Brussels on Tuesday for an extraordinary plenary session to discuss and vote on a resolution assessing the outcome of the U.K. referendum and its consequences for the European Union. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Council representatives will participate.
-EU Border Guard
MEPs will vote on the proposed EU border and coast guard, new provisions to improve cyber security and protect essential services, the EU's long-term budget and the final proposals to improve corporate taxation by the Special Committee on Tax Rulings II.
-Chapter 33
EU leaders agreed to open a new chapter number 33 on “financial and budgetary provisions” in Turkey's accession negotiations under the Dutch Presidency of the Council. This chapter will be opened formally on June 30 - the last day of the Dutch Presidency.
-Slovakia Presidency
Every six months, the Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates to a different member state. Slovakia will take over from the current Dutch Presidency on July 1.
