World's first floating wind farm starts production

- Statoil has 75 percent stake in Hywind Scotland project while U.A.E.'s Masdar has remaining 25 percent stake

The first floating wind farm in the world, Hywind Scotland, started to deliver electricity to the Scottish grid, according to Norway's Statoil on Wednesday.

The wind farm, located 25 kilometers offshore Peterhead in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, will power approximately 20,000 households.

Statoil is the operator of Hywind Scotland in partnership with the United Arab Emirates' Masdar.

"Hywind can be used for water depths up to 800 meters, thus opening up areas that so far have been inaccessible for offshore wind," Irene Rummelhoff, executive vice president of the New Energy Solutions business area in Statoil said, adding that lessons from learned from the project will pave the way for new global market opportunities for floating offshore wind energy.

Statoil has a 75 percent stake in the project and Masdar has the remaining 25 percent stake.
