Tesla introduces new battery storage project

- Tesla Motors' new storage units are able to provide electricity for daily needs of 2,500 homes in L.A. basin

The new battery storage units of California-based electrical automaker and energy storage company, Tesla Motors, can provide electricity for 2,500 homes throughout the day, the company announced on Monday.

The world famous tech firm said on Twitter that the storage units installed at Southern California Edison (SCE) substation are part of the largest operating lithium ion project in the world.

With the support of these units to store renewable energy sources, the use of fossil fuels in the Los Angeles basin and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced along with the provision of energy security.

'Meet the utility grid of the future. Tesla's Powerpack installation at SCE's substation will reduce the LA Basin's reliance on fossil fuels,' Tesla Motors said.

It also stated on the tweet that the 396 Tesla Powerpacks, with a capacity of 80-megawatt hours, could provide enough daily power for 2,500 homes.

Separately, in talks with U.S. media, the firm's Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel said, 'This project is exactly in line with our mission to accelerate sustainable technology and sustainable energy broadly for the world.'

'Storage is a piece that's been missing on the grid since the grid was invented, so thanks to these technologies, we're right at the turning point of being able to deliver storage and use renewables - solar, wind, and others - that can power people's needs for longer parts of the day,' Straubel added.

Serbian-American inventor and physicist Nikola Tesla developed the alternating current in 1886, which is used in electricity production.

Inspired by the famous inventor's name, Tesla Motors Company has been carrying out works to manufacture electrical cars and improve electricity storage systems since 2003.
