Over 10% of wind, solar accounts for US elec. in March

- Electricity generation from wind and solar will probably exceed 10% of total U.S. generation again in April 2017, says EIA

The U.S.' monthly electricity generation from wind and solar, including utility-scale plants and small-scale systems, exceeded 10 percent of total electricity generation for the first time, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday.

According to data based on March EIA’s Electric Power Monthly, the electricity generation from wind and solar saw a record growth.

'On an annual basis, wind and solar made up 7 percent of total U.S. electric generation in 2016,' the EIA stated.

Electricity generation from wind and solar follows seasonal patterns that reflect the seasonal availability of wind and sunshine.

'Based on seasonal patterns in recent years, electricity generation from wind and solar will probably exceed 10 percent of total U.S. generation again in April 2017, then fall to less than 10 percent in the summer months,' the administration stated.

In addition, based on annual data for 2016, Texas accounted for the largest total amount of wind and solar electricity generation.
